German manufacturer the Viessmann Group has published a set of emissions targets that will be achieved by accelerating its shift to renewables-based solutions. According to the company’s climate strategy, “LEAP to Net-Zero,” which was published in November 2021, this will include the electrification of heating systems using heat pumps powered by natural refrigerants like propane (R290).

Viessmann has received official approval of these scientifically based emissions targets by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) – an international collaboration that defines and promotes best practice in emissions reductions and net-zero targets.

According to a recent statement from the Viessmann Group, the commitment to reduce emissions from its entire value chain, which includes emissions from product use and end-of-life, will “enable partners and end customers alike to become independent of fossil fuels such as natural gas and oil.”

“By shifting our solutions’ portfolio to renewable technologies and decoupling fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions, we are implementing the first pillar of our integrated sustainability strategy,” said Alix Chambris, Vice President of Global Public Affairs and Sustainability at the Viessmann Group. “At the same time, we are leading our global family and value-chain partners on a sustainable and positive path.”

The SBTi approval of Viessmann’s emissions targets confirms that the manufacturer’s goals are compatible with the internationally agreed target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C (2.7°F), as stipulated in the Paris Climate Accord.

“By shifting our solutions’ portfolio to renewable technologies and decoupling fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions, we are implementing the first pillar of our integrated sustainability strategy.”

Alix Chambris, Viessmann

“Aligning our corporate strategy with climate science is an expression of our shared goal to create living spaces for generations to come,” said Chambris, “and it is the only possible response to the multiple crises of our time.”

As detailed in their climate strategy, Viessmann aims to achieve a 75% reduction in emissions by 2030 (based on 2005), with the ultimate goal of being climate neutral by 2050. This target includes both direct and indirect emissions from its operators and the entire value chain on a global scale (i.e., scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions).
