Austrian manufacturer AHT, part of Daikin, has launched a new range of propane (R290)-based refrigerated cabinets, which the company says represent “a quantum leap in efficiency and sustainability.”
The KALEA range covers both medium- and low-temperature applications and is available in plug-in and semi plug-in units to suit the varying needs of different retailers, the manufacturer said in a statement.
“We offer a wide range of sizes and configurations to provide a tailored solution for every store and store design,” it explained. “This innovative solution allows retailers to place refrigeration and freezer devices side by side with the same modern look.”

Energy savings
According to AHT, its KALEA units set new standards in design, sustainability and efficiency, with energy consumption ranging from class B to D, depending on the model and various configuration options.
AHT’s new semi plug-in units – KALEA CHILL SPI and KALEA FREEZE SPI – operate as part of a glycol-water system, which can recover waste heat from the refrigeration process for space heating or hot water production. This functionality can help to reduce energy consumption and costs. According to the manufacturer, its semi plug-in units can be easily integrated into a waterloop system through multiplex connections.

The plug-in cabinets – KALEA CHILL AIR and KALEA FREEZE AIR – simply need to be connected to a connected to a power supply, and they are ready to use.
All models in the KALEA range include AHT’s Inbox technology, which enables easier and faster servicing and maintenance.
“Cold components and technology are housed in a retractable base drawer, which means service times are significantly reduced, as goods do not need to be removed from the device,” explained AHT. “This leads to fewer operational disruptions and increased efficiency.”
The units are also compatible with the manufacturer’s Active Monitoring System (AMS), which can help end users detect system issues and faults earlier.
AHT’s R290 refrigerated cabinets are used in supermarkets around the world, from Brazil to Japan. The manufacturer’s display cases have also been installed at the Cold Chain Innovation Hub (CCI-Hub) in the Philippines as part of a project to demonstrate how natural refrigerant-based HVAC&R equipment can be deployed to improve the country’s agricultural cold chain.
