That approaches the number deployed from 2014-2016, as interest in self-contained propane cases grows.
AHT propane cases
AHT Cooling Systems USA, Ladson, S.C., has sold self-contained propane refrigeration cases to “well over 1,000 stores” in North America this year, as the interest in these energy-efficient cases continues to grow, said Howell Feig, national account manager, sales, for AHT.
The number of stores that have installed AHT propane cases this year (mostly in stores that have not used them before) approaches that deployed between 2014 and 2016, he added. AHT’s larger U.S. customers include Whole Foods Market and ShopRite stores.
“The charge will go up – the question is when and by how much.”

AHT’s propane units include wide and narrow island cases, spot bunkers and merchandisers, and upright frozen cases – all with doors or lids. He expects to be able to offer propane in small open vertical cases – as well as standard open multi-decks with multiple circuits – next year.
AHT is in discussions with retailers interested in equipping their stores entirely with propane cases, said Feig.
Feig is hoping to see the charge limits for propane in self-contained commercial cases raised from 150 g to 300-500 g. A higher charge limit would enable AHT to make upright frozen doored cases with one propane circuit instead of three and more easily use propane in multi-deck open cases. “The charge will go up – the question is when and by how much,” he said.
